The Side Note to the Side Note ~

Since I was a young girl, I have been captivated by horses! I used to draw them and always asked to visit them whenever the opportunity arose. Even though we never owned one ourselves, there were stables that I recall being taken to for riding. During my childhood years, I would visit a stable located across the street from our home. I was unable to cross the road alone because I was too young, so I would be accompanied by my family to interact with these magnificent horses that I could ride independently. My parents would drop me off with the riders as a chaperone. I found it amusing, even at the age of 8, due to my profound respect for the POWER of the HORSE. I could hear the horses neighing at night through my window. Things were quite similar when I lived in Hawaii, except I developed a fondness for Appaloosas.

By chance, in 1987, I began to write a story about them, recalling that as a child, I mistook their spots for "freckles". Although I was enchanted by Gypsy Vanners, the fairytale horses with long manes, tails, and furry boots, the spotted horses caught my attention. I began writing this tale based on my childhood memories after encountering the fairies one spring morning while hiking with my daughters in the Mohonk Mountains.

In 2000, I finally brought this story to life and intertwined it with the story of Julia Butterfly Hill, who had just descended from the Redwood Tree Luna after a two-year tree sit. Many of my dear friends, who were artists, environmentalists and activists, had drawn attention to her, visiting her and even composing songs about her!

I brought my Son and Daughter to meet her and she sat out in the lobby answering questions and signing books after the show. Laura Love played music at the event. Her first week down from the tree after 2-years, she was giving a speech at Tampa Theater, and my partner at the time painted a portrait of her, which she signed, sparking my inquiry about authoring a story with her being in it later to her publicist, Paul Bassist. They stipulated that the book could be written only if it was printed on RECYCLED PAPER. Unfortunately, there were no recycled paper presses available at that time. Now, the book can be downloaded digitally!

When I was younger, drawing horses was my favorite pastime. However, I also repeatedly sketched a dog, a specific style of dog. Meet Topaz. Everything You Do Takes a Look At You!

I have NEVER, EVER been to the Redwood Forest, someday, I may chance the time to do so!
